Breast Cancer Trek – POMCRS

POMCRS LogoPort Moresby Cancer Relief Society

In October 2011, Getaway Trekking partnered with the Port Moresby Cancer Relief Society to host a trek across the Kokoda Track, to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer in Papua New Guinea. This trek will be the second of this series.

Breast Cancer is the third largest cancer killer in Papua New Guinea. In dealing with this disease, many PNG women do not have access to the same level of public health services we enjoy in Australia and other first world nations. In addition, many women live in rural and remote areas where health education and early intervention services do not exist. As a result, many women presenting with breast cancer do so when their cancer is advanced.

In addition to raising funds and awareness in PNG, the women trekking the Kokoda Track distributed material in both English and Pidgin, to educate women about self checking, what to look for and what action to take if needed.
