Butch and Stan Bisset Memorial Trek
Getaway Trekking is proud have supported the Bisset extended family and friends across the Kokoda Track in August this year. Their trek was a pilgrimage in honour of Stan and Butch Bisset. The group comprised many family members, including 2 of Stan’s granddaughters.
This was a very personal journey for many and included a highly emotional 4am service at the clearing just south of Isurava Battlefield, where Butch Bisset died of wounds in his brother Stan’s arms. The group walked from Isurava in silence and gathered at the clearing. We heard from the three branches of the family who were represented, before Ben Bisset, Stan and Butch’s great nephew, sang Danny Boy. It was incredibly moving, and a fitting tribute to these two men; brothers, soldiers and great Australians.
Charlie Bisset, Stan’s grand-daughter, provided some thoughts and recollections about her grandfather prior to the trek. For some other comments on the trek, please click here. We’ve also included background information on Stan and Butch, and an obituary published by the Age about Stan on his passing in October last year.
Lest we forget.
