Kavieng Liesure Destination

Kavieng…is the starting point for some beautiful beach resorts, offering white sand, clear warm waters and the friendly welcome repeat visitors to Papua New Guinea have become accustomed to.

The provincial centre of New Ireland, Kavieng is situated at the northern tip. The large, beautiful harbour is a popular destination for scuba diving, sports fishing, surfing and cruising yachts. Along the edge of the harbour is Nusa Parade, which passes many points of historical interest. As you travel along this road, enjoy the shaded respite provided by the huge trees and sea breezes, before visiting the main market, where the locals will be keen to trade with you!

Kavieng is a sleepy little town with a golf course, a range of restaurants, bars and facilities, including banks, supply stores, bakeries and supermarkets. You will not find restaurants, shopping centres or clubs here – Kavieng is a place to escape from the rat race and enjoy watching the world go by.

The main Kavieng Market is situated on the foreshore and is a central hub of activity most days of the week, except Sundays. There is a great variety of locally grown vegetables and fruits, seafood including fresh and smoked fish, live mud crabs, baskets of sunga and kina shells (types of molluscs like pipis and cockles). You will also see plenty of buai (betel-nut) for sale.

The markets of Kavieng will also offer you tapioca slice made with coconut milk, sago slice, donuts, rice balls and other local delicacies. This is generally a produce market, however there are also opportunities to purchase mementos of your trip here – you may enjoy taking home a woven basket, a locally printed lap-laps or a hand-made bilums (bags).

You will feel very comfortable walking around Kavieng – it’s a pretty and peaceful place to visit, and the people are friendly and welcoming.
