Milne Bay
Milne Bay can be found at the most south-eastern tip of PNG. Traditionally a maritime province, Milne Bay offers spectacular reefs and plentiful scuba diving opportunities – in fact, PNG is known as one of the top diving destinations in the world.
This province is richly cultural, with a heritage of trade between the 160 inhabited islands among the richest cultural heritages in the Pacific. Most people who live in Alotau depend largely on subsistence farming and fishing for their livelihood.
Home to 250 species of charismatic and endemic birds such as the Goldieās Bird of Paradise, Milne Bay also has an important historical context for Australians, You may wish to take a tour learning about the activities and accomplishments of the allied troops during WWII.
Alotau, the administrative capital and the main business centre of the Milne Bay is the base for island hopping trips to neighboring islands of Samarai, Goodenough, Ferguson, Normanby and the Trobriand and D’Entrecasteaux Islands. The area is also well known for its reef, deep sea, and estuary fishing, and many options including day and overnight trips can be arranged easily.
