Walk in the spirit of a digger

Getaway Trekking is honoured and proud to be working with the 39th Australian Infantry Battalion Association to honour their diggers, who fought so magnificently during the Kokoda Campaign.

During the 70th Anniversary of the Kokoda Campaign in 2012, we will run several commemorative treks to honour important battles during the campaign. Trekkers participating in these treks will have the opportunity to trek in honour of one of the 39th’s fallen. You will be provided with the name and war service number of a 39th soldier, with which you will be able to conduct as much research as you wish to. (Of course, if you are already aware of a soldier you wish to honour, that is fine too.) At an appropriate point on the track, we will hold a memorial service in his honour, during which time you have the opportunity to share what you have learned.

The men of the 39th, and the other battalions who fought with such distinction were courageous soldiers. But they were more than that. They were men too. They were fathers, brothers and sons. And they gave their lives in the service of their country, so that we could enjoy what they cannot.

This is a unique opportunity to travel beyond the history books and gain a personal insight into those who fought in the inhospitable terrain that was the Kokoda Track.
