Your Safety is our Priority
There has been significant publicity recently about safety on the Kokoda Trail, particularly in light of the unfortunate deaths of Australian undertaking this quite arduous trek. This is not a trek for the faint hearted, and those undertaking it need to be well prepared, in terms of fitness, equipment and expectation. In addition, it is incumbent on the trek operator to provide as safe an environment as is possible, given the remoteness of the environment. A medic is present on every trek.
Getaway Trekking will assist you in developing the appropriate fitness levels by inviting you to join us on regular training sessions. If that is not practicable, we will help you develop your own training program and monitor your progress. A good level of fitness is required, and anyone intending to take on our treks has a personal responsibility to ensure they are well prepared. As a professional trekking operator your safety is our priority. We require a medical clearance from your doctor prior to your embarking.
Our trekking leaders are qualified to Wilderness First Aid Leaders level (internationally recognised certification for trek leaders operating in remote areas), and regularly update their training and qualifications. We carry satellite phones with regular check in protocols to our operations base. We have in country logistical support and tested evacuation protocols. This has led to an enviable safety record. We carry river rescue equipment and our leaders and operational staff are competent in the use of all equipment. Our senior management team regularly provide professional development to our in country trekking staff. Our extensive first aid kits are continually upgraded and maintained.
