Papua New Guinea is a magnificent country, amazingly biodiverse and with some of the most beautiful and rugged terrain to be found anywhere. For travellers looking for the road less travelled, Papua New Guinea will both entrance and intrigue. With very little tourism infrastructure you can feel like you’re stepping into the great unknown – but this is exactly what is so compelling about this country.
Papua New Guinea has several thousand separate communities, many with only a few hundred people. This is a country divided not just by customs and tradition, but by language, and is home to over one third of the world’s languages.
A beautiful, friendly and easy going place, New Ireland has perfect white-sand beaches and rivers of clear water tumbling down from the ruggedly forested central Schleinitz Range.
Long, narrow and mountainous, New Ireland boasts never ending beaches, the popular Malagan Show, the unique traditions of Shark Calling, exhilarating sports fishing, excellent sailing grounds, world-class surfing and is one of the most diverse diving destinations on the earth
Your home during your stay is the relaxing and laid-back Lissenung Island Resort. Picture a small private island with a white sandy beach, tall palm trees, beautiful flowers, magnificent sunsets and traditional bungalows. Surrounding this beautiful adults-only hideaway are some of the most colourful reefs and the best fish life this planet has to offer….
Day 1 Lissenung Island Resort ( /L/D)
Upon arrival in Kavieng, you will be met and transferred to the beautiful Lissenung Island Resort.
The Resort is located a 20 minute boat ride away from Kavieng. Operating now for around 15 years, the owners have ensured the resort has maintained its ambience by keeping accommodation to a maximum of 14 guests at any one time
Other than a handful of local staff, you won’t see another soul. You can easily circumnavigate the entire island in about 10-15 minutes. Deckchairs and a bottle of wine on the beach at sunset time are the perfect way of ending an exciting day of diving. Overnight: Lissenung Island Resort
Day 2-4 Activities (B/L/D)
Although Lissenung was set up originally and continues to cater primarily for divers, the resort offers activities for the non diver as well.
Approximately 2/3 of Lissenung Island is surrounded by a beautiful reef, providing ample opportunity for snorkelling right off the beach, in some cases even almost from your front door!
The reef surrounding the island is well stocked, with at least 175 different species of fish! Snorkelling provides the opportunity to see a wide variety of species including juvenile reef sharks, turtles, octopus and moray eels.
For a small fee, and space permitting, snorkellers can also accompany the divers on the boat for some snorkelling. Many of our dive sites are very well suited for snorkelling, with shallow reef tops and little or no current. There are some wonderful snorkelling reefs within easy reach by boat; shallow, colourful and generally without any current.
Other options include
- Fishing
New Ireland is home to 149 mostly uninhabited islands, which create a myriad of channels with currents ranging from gentle to ripping. These currents bring in pelagic fish such as Giant Trevally, Spanish Mackerel, Mahi Mahi, Barracuda as well as Yellowfin, Dogtooth and Skipjack Tuna. Plenty of Mangrove Jack, Red Emperor, Coral Trout, Rock Cod and Sweetlips are caught closer to the fringing coral reefs. - Surfing
New Ireland is famous for fantastic diving, but the surfing here is pretty good, too! With swells ranging from 2 – 6 or even 8ft, you won’t get Hawaii like surf, but it’s a lot less crowded, too, as the breaks we go to are not visited by any other surf operator. - Kite surfing
…. straight off the island, no boat transfers needed, hence no extra cost. There is a lookout on the beach and a rescue boat on stand-by.
Best times of the year are from mid June to mid September with steady SE winds, then again January – March with NW winds. - Village & cultural tours
The cultural tours are fascinating and provide an insight into life without electricity, TV or running water. This is a world where kids still play outside, love to swim, and have no TV to sit in front of all day. Take a picture; they will love to be shown the image on your digital camera!
