Papua New Guinea is a magnificent country, amazingly biodiverse and with some of the most beautiful and rugged terrain to be found anywhere. For travellers looking for the road less travelled, Papua New Guinea will both entrance and intrigue. With very little tourism infrastructure you can feel like you’re stepping into the great unknown – but this is exactly what is so compelling about this country.

Papua New Guinea has several thousand separate communities, many with only a few hundred people. This is a country divided not just by customs and tradition, but by language, and is home to over one third of the world’s languages.

A beautiful, friendly and easy going place, New Ireland has perfect white-sand beaches and rivers of clear water tumbling down from the ruggedly forested central Schleinitz Range.

Long, narrow and mountainous, New Ireland boasts never ending beaches, the popular Malagan Show, the unique traditions of Shark Calling, exhilarating sports fishing, excellent sailing grounds, world-class surfing and is one of the most diverse diving destinations on the earth

Your home during your stay is the relaxing and laid-back Lissenung Island Resort. Picture a small private island with a white sandy beach, tall palm trees, beautiful flowers, magnificent sunsets and traditional bungalows. Surrounding this beautiful adults-only hideaway are some of the most colourful reefs and the best fish life this planet has to offer….

Day 1 Lissenung Island Resort ( /L/D)

Upon arrival in Kavieng, you will be met and transferred to the beautiful Lissenung Island Resort.

The Resort is located a 20 minute boat ride away from Kavieng. Operating now for around 15 years, the owners have ensured the resort has maintained its ambience by keeping accommodation to a maximum of 14 guests at any one time

Other than a handful of local staff, you won’t see another soul. You can easily circumnavigate the entire island in about 10-15 minutes. Deckchairs and a bottle of wine on the beach at sunset time are the perfect way of ending an exciting day of diving. Overnight: Lissenung Island Resort

Day 2-4 Activities (B/L/D)

Although Lissenung was set up originally and continues to cater primarily for divers, the resort offers activities for the non diver as well.

Approximately 2/3 of Lissenung Island is surrounded by a beautiful reef, providing ample opportunity for snorkelling right off the beach, in some cases even almost from your front door!

The reef surrounding the island is well stocked, with at least 175 different species of fish! Snorkelling provides the opportunity to see a wide variety of species including juvenile reef sharks, turtles, octopus and moray eels.

For a small fee, and space permitting, snorkellers can also accompany the divers on the boat for some snorkelling. Many of our dive sites are very well suited for snorkelling, with shallow reef tops and little or no current. There are some wonderful snorkelling reefs within easy reach by boat; shallow, colourful and generally without any current.

Other options include

Fishing
New Ireland is home to 149 mostly uninhabited islands, which create a myriad of channels with currents ranging from gentle to ripping. These currents bring in pelagic fish such as Giant Trevally, Spanish Mackerel, Mahi Mahi, Barracuda as well as Yellowfin, Dogtooth and Skipjack Tuna. Plenty of Mangrove Jack, Red Emperor, Coral Trout, Rock Cod and Sweetlips are caught closer to the fringing coral reefs.

Surfing
New Ireland is famous for fantastic diving, but the surfing here is pretty good, too! With swells ranging from 2 – 6 or even 8ft, you won’t get Hawaii like surf, but it’s a lot less crowded, too, as the breaks we go to are not visited by any other surf operator.

Kite surfing
…. straight off the island, no boat transfers needed, hence no extra cost. There is a lookout on the beach and a rescue boat on stand-by.
Best times of the year are from mid June to mid September with steady SE winds, then again January – March with NW winds.

Village & cultural tours
The cultural tours are fascinating and provide an insight into life without electricity, TV or running water. This is a world where kids still play outside, love to swim, and have no TV to sit in front of all day. Take a picture; they will love to be shown the image on your digital camera!

Overnight: Lissenung Island Resort

Day 5 Tour ends (B)

Sadly, this morning you will say goodbye to our little piece of paradise and transfer to the airport for your onward journey.

DAY 3 KATHMANDU TO POKHARA (B)
We will take morning flight around 8 AM to Pokhara. We will arrive in Pokhara early so this gives us enough time to look around this lovely town. In the afternoon we have a sightseeing tour around Pokhara Valley, which covers Fewa Lake, Devi’s water fall, Museum, Tibetan refugee settlement and Gupteshower cave etc. Overnight at hotel in Pokhara.

DAY 4 DRIVE TO NAYAPUL (1010METERS) BY PRIVATE TOURIST VEHICLE, AND TREK TO TIKHEDUNGA (1570METERS) 4 HOURS (B,L,D).
We begin our trek at Nayapul after 1 hour driving from Pokhara. After a 15 minute short walk along the bank of the Modi Khola, we reach Birethanti (1015meters), a large village that has many shops and teahouses. From there, the trail follows the north bank of the Bhurungdi Khola, climbing steadily up the side of the valley to Hille at 1495m. After the short climb, we reach Tikhedhunga at 1570meters. Today’s walk offers a short and relatively easy day, during the journey which allows us to become used to the experience of trekking in Nepal.

DAY 5 TIKHEDUNGA TO GHOREPANI (2840METERS) 8-9 HOURS (B,L,D).
Leaving Tikhedunga, we begin our journey with a steep climb to Ulleri, a large Magar village at 2070 meters. Today, very early in the morning, we start an hour hiking to Poon Hill at elevation of 3210 meters, a brilliant spectacle; this vantage point provides an unobstructed view of sunrise over the high Himalayas. We spend about 1 hour before returning to Ghorepani where we take a hot breakfast. We then trek to Tadapani (2610meters), climbing along ridges and through pine and rhododendron forests to Deurali (2960meters).

Kilimanjaro. The name itself captures images of excitement, adventure and the compelling beauty of East Africa.

When you see it, you understand why. Not only is this the highest peak on the African continent; it is also the tallest free-standing mountain in the world, rising in breathtaking isolation from the surrounding coastal scrubland – elevation around 900 metres – to an imperious 5,895 metres (19,336 feet).

Kilimanjaro is one of the world’s most accessible high summits, a mecca for adventure travellers from around the world. For most climbers, reaching Uhuru Point, the actual summit, or Gillman’s Point on the lip of the crater, is what it’s all about.

But as with so many of our other destinations, there is so much more to Kili than her summit. The ascent of the slopes is a virtual climatic world tour, from the tropics to the Arctic. A varied terrain, your trek will cover lush montane forest inhabited by elephant, leopard and buffalo, and the moorland zone, where a cover of giant heather is studded with otherworldly giant lobelias.

Above 4,000m, a surreal alpine desert precedes a spectacle of ice and snow – and the magnificent beauty of the roof of the continent.

For many people, a trip to Tanzania to climb Mt. Kilimanjaro is a trip of a lifetime. – most people don’t make that trip twice. If it’s African wildlife you’re excited about seeing, you’ll love the safari through the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, where, if we’re lucky, we’ll see an abundance of game.

Day 1: Arusha (D)
Upon arrival into Kilimanjaro airport you will be met and transferred to your accommodation in Arusha. This afternoon your guide team will hold a climb briefing and equipment check. Overnight: Ahadi Lodge, Arusha

Day 2: Rest Day(B,L,D)
Today is set aside for some rest following the long flight to Africa. Some time should be spent checking and packing your gear for the climb that commences tomorrow. There will be time to explore the town of Arusha and there are a number of half day sightseeing tours of the area that can be arranged for those that wish to get out and about. Alternatively, the Lodge is a great place to have a swim, read a book and generally kick back in readiness for the trek. Overnight: Ahadi Lodge, Arusha

Day 3: Commence trekking (B,L,D)
After breakfast we will be met by our Head Guide and transferred to the National Park gate (1820m) where we will meet the porters that will be assisting our group throughout the climb. After completing the necessary registration formalities at National Park gate, it is relatively easy walking for the first hour before the track gets steeper. The track on this first day can be quite muddy and slippery and the lush forest we will walk through is similar to that of Kokoda.

Lunch will be provided on the way before arriving at our overnight location – Machame Camp (3020m). [4-5 hours walking] Overnight on the mountain (in tents)

Day 4: Trekking (B,L,D)
Today will be an easy day which will help with acclimatization. There is opportunity to explore the volcanic rock formations of Shira Plateau. We walk to the summit of Shira Cathedral, a huge buttress of rock flanked by steep pinnacles, before reaching our overnight location at Moir Camp. (3840m). This campsite has some of the most stunning views on Kilimanjaro, close to the glaciated dome of Kibo and the jagged rim of Shira Plateau. The views from here of Mt. Meru floating on the clouds are simply unforgettable. [4-5 hours walking] Overnight on the mountain (in tents).

Day 5: Trekking (B,L,D)
A morning of gentle ascent and panoramic views, leaving the moorland plateau behind to walk on lava ridges beneath the glaciers of the Western Breach. After lunch near the Lava Tower junction (4550m) we descend to the bottom of the Great Barranco Valley (3900m) sheltered by towering cliffs and with extensive views of the plains far below. [5-7 hours walking] Overnight at Barranco Camp (3950m) (in tents)

Day 6: Trekking (B,L,D)
A steep climb up the Barranco Wall leads us to an undulating trail on the south-eastern flank of Kibo. From here you will experience the superb vistas of the Southern Ice fields. Lunch is usually taken at Karanga, the last water point which lies in a steep valley. After lunch, the terrain changes to scree and we climb steeply to reach our destination by mid afternoon. Overnight at Karanga Valley campsite (41000m) (in tents)

Day 7 Trekking (B,L,D)
We continue our journey [6-8hours walking] toward our final overnight camp before summit day. A steady pace today will ensure you conserve energy for the final assault on Mt Kilimanjaro. Arriving early afternoon, the remainder of the day is spent resting in preparation for the final ascent before a very early night. There are often spectacular views to the plains far below from Barafu (4700m). Overnight on the mountain (in tents)

Day 8: Trekking – Summit Day (B,L,D)
We will start our ascent by torchlight at about 1 a.m so that we can be up on the Crater rim by sunrise. The steep climb over loose volcanic scree has some well-graded zig zags and a slow but steady pace will take us to Stella Point (5737m), in about five or six hours. We will rest for a short time to enjoy the sunrise over Mawenzi. Those who are still feeling strong can make the 2 hour round trip from here along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5896m), passing close to the spectacular glaciers and ice cliffs that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent to Barafu is surprisingly fast, and after some refreshment, we continue to descend to reach our final campsite at the edge of Mweka Forest (3100 m). [11-15hours walking] Overnight on the mountain (in tents)

Day 9 Descent from Summit (B,D)
A sustained descent through lovely forest with lush undergrowth takes us to the National Park gate at Mweka (1650m) [4-6 hours walking] When we finish the climb, there will be a vehicle waiting to meet you and transfer you back to your accommodation in Arusha. Overnight: Ahadi Lodge, Arusha

Day 10: Commence Safari (B,L,D)
After breakfast you are met by the 4×4 Safari vehicles which will transfer you to Tarangirie National Park where we will have a picnic lunch. Following lunch we commence a late afternoon game drive and exploration – this is the best time to see animals in the park. We are likely to see: monkeys, elephants, zebras, impalas, giraffes, buffalos, hippos and more… Overnight: Permanent Camp – Maramboi Luxury Camp

Day 11: Tarangirie National Park – Serengeti National Park (B,L,D)
Following breakfast we take an early morning walk with Maasai to Lake Manyara shoreline. We then head off to the Serengeti NP via Olduvai Gorge. This drive takes 3-4 hours. Located in the East Serengeti Plains there is an amazing landscape and much history to be enjoyed. Lunch is provided en route and in the afternoon we continue to Serengeti NP and on to our overnight camp. Overnight: Nasikia Luxury Mobile Camp – Serengeti NP

Day 12: Serengeti National Park (B,L,D)
Breakfast is provided at the camp followed by a full day in the amazing Serengeti wilderness. Today is spent taking in the wildlife and scenery. A picnic lunch is provided as we explore this World Heritage listed area with its abundance of game. Overnight: Nasikia Luxury Mobile Camp – Serengeti NP

Day 13: Serengeti National Park – Ngorongoro Crater (B,L,D)
After breakfast we depart Serengeti NP – enjoying a game drive on the way. We travel on to Ngorongoro Crater which is the best pace to see the black rhino as well as pride of lions including the magnificent black-maned male. Colorful flamingos and an abundance of water birds will never cease to amaze you. Other game includes: leopard, cheetah, hyena and antelope.
In the early evening we head to our overnight accommodation. Overnight: Rhino Lodge – Ngorongoro Crater

Day 14 Ngorongoro Crater – Arusha (B,L,D)
After breakfast we descend to the crater floor on an amazing game drive. There is a great opportunity to see zebras, elephants, leopard, cheetah, hyena, antelope, elands and oryx. Huge herds of wildebeest migrate in and around this region and with them come they animals that prey upon them particularly during the breeding season. A picnic lunch is provided as we take in the magnificent vista. In afternoon we head to our overnight accommodation. Overnight: Ahadi Lodge, Arusha

Calling all active travellers!

Do you love being in the outdoors?

Do you enjoy working hard for a good cause?

Do you love being fit and healthy?

Love to travel with like minded people?

If you’ve answered ‘yes’ to these questions, our 2012 Cairns Adventure just might tick all your boxes. We start with a day trek up to Glacier Rock, through the stunning Barron Gorge National Park. You will be blown away by the vista from the Rock, and you’ll love your gourmet lunch – you’ve earned it!

But the activity has just begun! Participating in the Cairns Cardiac Challenge is a great way to find a focus to see this beautiful region. Over 3 days, we will cycle the 335km from Cairns to Cooktown, and you will love the country, love the exhilaration and love the camaraderie of your pack.

On completion of the ride at Cooktown, join the rest of the gang for lunch on the Endeavour River, and the Gala Dinner, where you can enjoy a few drinks, celebrating your achievements!
We return to Cairns, for some R&R before your final activity – choose between a snorkelling cruise on the Great Barrier Reef, or a kayak tour from Palm Cove to Double Island.

Three different ways to get out off the beaten track and enjoy Far North Queensland – it’s a different world!

So what are you waiting for?

Cairns 7 Nights / 8 Days Adventure

Day 1 Cairns

Upon arrival in Cairns you will be met and transferred to our hotel. Tonight is at leisure. Overnight: Cairns. (-/-/-)

Day 2 Glacier Rock Trek

An early start this morning to beat the heat. We will travel a short distance to Barron Gorge National Park, where we will leave our vehicle. Our walk commences along the road for approximately 2 kilometres, before moving off road and onto the beautiful natural tracks of the Park.

We will trek for approximately 3 hours, enjoying drink breaks and photo stops along the way to Glacier Rock, where we will stop for an early lunch. Food never tasted so good! After enjoying the magnificent vista from Glacier Rock, we will commence our descent and continue the loop back to our start point at Stoney Creek.

The rest of your afternoon will be at leisure, though we must deliver our cycles to the start point for loading, and attend the briefing tonight at 5pm. Overnight: Cairns (B/L /-)

Day 3 Cardiac Challenge Start – Day 1

Another early morning will see us at the cycle start point on the south side of Cairns. There will be an official send off involving some short speeches, and then we are off!

Those electing to ride up the Kuranda Range will be monitored and set-off by the Army support team; those selecting the less strenuous option will have our bikes loaded into trucks before alighting the bus for this part of our journey. At the top of the range we will collect our bikes and commence the ride.

Today we will ride to Mareeba, where we will stop for morning tea. Lunch will be at Mount Molloy and in the afternoon, we will ride through to Mt Carbine, where we will overnight at the caravan park. Overnight: Mt Carbine Caravan Park (B/L/D)

Day 4 Cardiac Challenge – Day 2

Breakfast is served from 6am, and those electing to take the Desailey Range Challenge will be sent out first. All other riders will be supported to the top of the range before continuing on their ride. Lunch today will be at the Palmer River Roadhouse, followed by a short ride in the afternoon. Overnight: Lakeland School, Lakeland Hotel or Lakeland Caravan Park (B/L/D)

Day 5 Cardiac Challenge – Day 3

Although a shorter day, it can be challenging due to headwinds! We will be riding through to Cooktown for lunch on the banks of the Endeavour River and a mass photo session in front of the boat near the Captain Cook monument.

Our group will join together at the Annan River and again at the Information bay on the outskirts of Cooktown – this is where the local police will co-ordinate our mass ride through the town centre.
We will enjoy a BBQ lunch on the banks of the Endeavour River, before preparing our bikes for the return transport. Then, it’s onto a hot shower and fresh clothes, before dinner and a few drinks with the gang. Overnight: Cooktown Hotel (or similar) (B/L /D)

Day 6 Return to Cairns

A cooked BBQ breakfast will be available on our last morning together, and our bus will be aiming to leave at 9.00am. On arrival in Cairns, check back into our hotel and the rest of your day is at leisure – you might want to hit the shops, visit the Esplanade, have a massage, or just relax by the pool! Overnight: Cairns. (B/-/-)

Day 7 Cairns

Today you have a choice of activities to help you enjoy this most beautiful part of Australia. Please note only minimal fitness is required for both:

Travel out to the magnificent Great Barrier Reef on one of Cairns’ cruisers. Enjoy some snorkeling, or you may even want to try scuba diving. Lunch is included, and this tour will run from 8am – 4pm.

Those feeling a bit more energetic may choose a half day tour, kayaking out to Double Island. Snorkeling is also lovely here, and a morning tea of fresh fruit, juice and cakes will keep the munchies at bay for your return paddle. This tour will run from 8.30am – 12.30pm.

As tonight is our last night, we will enjoy a group dinner at our hotel. Overnight: Cairns. (B/L/D)

Day 8 Departure

The hotel shuttle will take you to the airport to connect with your flight. You may have some muscles you didn’t know about, but you will also have some great memories and hopefully, some new friends!

Highlights

15 day adventure tour with 12 nights trekking across the Owen Stanley Ranges

Experience many villages on your adventure tour where few white men or women have been

Trek up and alongside many rivers before we climb the main range. This is, quite literally, a rivers trek

Trek through beautiful savannah grasslands before crossing the mighty Musa River

Boat ride from Embessa down Musa River to Foru Island for overnight stay

Early morning boat ride from the mouth of the Musa across the Solomon Sea to Oro Bay

Experience magnificent scenery, wonderful sunsets and star gazing along this new adventure in Papua New Guinea

NB only available to experienced trekkers who are fit and can handle a challenging trek

Day 1

Arrive in Port Moresby. You will be collected at the airport and transferred to our accommodation for the evening. We will hold a brief this afternoon, and you will have the opportunity to get to know your fellow adventurers over dinner. Overnight: Port Moresby

Day 2

Today will be your first taste of your PNG adventure. After breakfast we meet our bus for the drive down the highway to Moreguina. On arrival, we will visit the Primary School and re-connect with our friends there who have shown us such hospitality in the past. Waving goodbye, we will climb aboard our bus and take the short drive to Yanu Station, at the very start of our trek. Overnight: Yanu Station 1 / 4 / 60

Day 3

An early morning start sees us trekking along one of the many rivers in the foothills of the Owen Stanley Ranges. We pass by the impressive Gamgee Falls on the Aisa River. (NB: we have some history here.) We will set up our overnight camp on the banks of the Uma River, enjoying a relaxing swim before dining under the stars. What could be better? Overnight: Bush camp – Uma River 8 / 8 / 100

Day 4

A varied day awaits us as we tackle some steep climbs over the Owen Stanleys before dropping to the Aisa River. Our trek takes us along and through the river, and we can enjoy the beautiful serenity of this valley, leading us to the Nicosia River, where we will make camp for the night. Overnight: Bush Camp – Nicosia River 10 /10 / 300

Day 5

Our trek continues along the Nicosia River as we again climb the Owen Stanley Range. The track becomes quite narrow in parts, and though the jungle around you is very beautiful, you will need to concentrate on your feet to ensure you arrive safely at camp tonight. Overnight: Bush camp – Mountain Garden 11 / 11 / 680

Day 6

An early start and we climb well into the range this morning. We take a lunch break at the top of the range at 1450 mts ASL. After lunch we make our descent down to the scenic and yet devastated Ukuma River, which we cross some 64 times throughout the day! We make our way downstream to the beautiful village of Domearu, for a well earned break in a wonderful guest house. This river in particular, was hit by the torrential rains of cyclone Guba in November 2007 Overnight: Domearu 10 / 10 / 544

Day 7

We must start very early today as we will complete 20 kms over 9 hours of hard trekking. We are predominantly in the rivers now, having crossed the Owen Stanley Range, but still need to stay focused as there are many obstacles to overcome. We stay in the village of Jari, a wonderful village that has not seen taubadas (white men) for some time. We are now roughly half way through the trekking side of our adventure. Overnight: Jari 9 / 21 / 180

Day 8

A welcome rest day– after the last few days of very hard work, today is a short 2 hour trek. We will start early though, as we are mostly in full sun, and trekking through kunai and savannah grass. You will love the hospitality you receive at your village for tonight. Overnight: Babira 2 2 / 6 / 196

Day 9

A second easy day will have you fully re-charged, as we take an easy pace on our trek through to Yauri. A 2.5 hour walk will take us into this lovely village and our welcoming guesthouse accommodation. Yauri is on the banks of the Awara River and we can soak away any aches with a refreshing swim. Overnight: Yauri 3 / 9 / 182

Day 10

An early start before the dawn provides the beauty of another day unfolding before our eyes. Cool breezes, mountain mist and landscape outlines give way to the colors of morning as we continue our trek through Savannah grasslands. Tonight we will experience one of the best welcomes on the track. Overnight: Safia 3 / 6 / 134

Day 11

More Savannah grassland greets us today, enroute to more river crossings as we trek further along the track. Everywhere you will find beauty in this pristine environment and by now you will have fallen in love with the gentleness and authenticity of its people. Some uphill walking today before arriving at our village which has a nearby river, so a refreshing bath is definitely on the menu tonight! Overnight: Naora 9 / 18 / 312

Day 12

Today we complete the trekking section of our adventure as we arrive at the large village of Embessa in the morning for a wonderful traditional welcome.

One of the larger villages we visit, Embessa has a population of around 900, and is on the Musa River. Enjoy your swim this afternoon, but don’t get swept away – this river has a mighty current! An afternoon of rest, or getting into the local culture – as there will be plenty of that in this remotest of villages. Overnight: Embessa 22 / 8 / 150

Day 13

We continue our adventure boarding our boat for the voyage down the Musa River. By nightfall we reach Foru Island at the mouth of the Musa as it enters the sea. We spend the night in huts on stilts by the riverside, listening to the ocean in the distance, ensuring we are careful to avoid the crocs. The sunsets here can be magnificent. At this point, we have learned to expect the unexpected! Overnight: Foru Island Boat 8 / 113 / 5

Day 14

Arise well before sunrise for our boat ride from the mouth of the mighty Musa River across the Solomon Sea to Oro Bay.

From there, we make our way to Popondetta (POP) on a PMV, then to Girua airport for the short flight to Port Moresby, where once again we sleep in a real bed in our comfortable hotel.

Look back on your day and consider the reality of your journey from the Musa River to Moresby – all in a day! Overnight: Port Moresby Boat 4 / 58 Truck 1 / 40 Plane .5 / 150 / 10

Day 15

We have packed our bags the previous night as we have learned to be prepared well in advance in this country that is Papua New Guinea. Hopefully the head and body are in good shape after the previous nights celebrations of your trek of a lifetime. Then we’re off home, after an amazing overseas adventure. Unreal! Overnight: Home

Key to notes: 3 / 6 / 60 = 3 hours over 6 kms (approx) at an elevation of 60 metres ASL

Trek Cost – $ 4,995.00 (based on minimum 8 participants)

To ensure your journey is memorable for all of the right reasons, our attention to safety is second to none. Getaway Trekking & Adventures staff are experienced leaders and trekkers in PNG and have completed the MMV Trek previously. All have Wilderness First Aid training. GT leaders will carry an extensive wilderness First Aid kit, but you are expected to bring your own for personal use. We have an excellent support network both in POM & Australia. We are in regular contact via satellite phone to our logistics base. Getaway Trekking & Adventures can assist you in your physical preparation and help you with the correct selection of clothing and equipment.
NB. As previously stated, this tour will only be available to experienced trekkers who are fit and can handle a category 4 walk.

Risk

Please be aware and take note; this trek covers a particularly remote part of Papua New Guinea. As we are the only operator leading treks in this area, it is very likely you will not see any other people aside from those who lives in villages along the track. Whilst this is a highlight of this adventure, it does create additional risk factors to consider.

In the event of illness or injury, we will be reliant on our own resources and equipment. This is predominantly true of all treks, however there is no opportunity to use the expertise or knowledge of other trekkers / leaders (e.g. if a member of another group at the same campsite is a doctor).

The nature of the trek includes many river and log crossings. Each carries its own risk factor, which has been assessed and planned for. Safety protocols apply that must be adhered to.

We cannot control the weather conditions or the environment in which we travel. We have allowed extra time for contingencies beyond our control such as torrential rain and flooded rivers, however if the trek leader believes the environment has become unsafe in which to trek, he/she has the discretion to terminate the trek.

At the conclusion of the trek, we spend an entire day in a boat voyaging down the Musa River, before travelling across the Solomon Sea. Saltwater crocodiles can be found in the Musa River.

Weather conditions in Papua New Guinea are often unreliable and it is advisable that plenty of time is allowed for travel transits. Getaway Trekking & Adventures is not responsible for any costs incurred by connections that are not made.

Participation in this trek is by application. Getaway Trekking & Adventures needs to be satisfied that you are mentally and physically capable of completing this trek.

Please note the decision to evacuate a trekker for their own safety is at the sole discretion of the trek leader.

Join us on this emotional coast to coast journey, honouring the heroic feats of young US Army soldiers during the WW2 Papuan Campaign in 1942/43. Members of the US Army’s 2nd Battalion, 126th Regiment, 32nd Red Arrow Division were ordered to outflank the Japanese at Buna on the northern beaches of Papua New Guinea. As you trek along the 200+ kilometres of village tracks and mountain range that is the Kapa Kapa Track, you will go beyond the history books and experience the difficult terrain, through the tropical jungle in which they trudged to join the Aussies in the fight on the northern beaches.

We travel from the southern coastal village of Gaba Gaba, north along the track to finish at Buna on the north coast. En route we will pass through many villages that have not seen ‘taubadas’ or white men before. We will recall the bravery of US GI’s at Buna, where they suffered heavy casualties, alongside their Aussie mates.

Here you will have the opportunity to join with your fellow trekkers with our wonderful carriers in thanks and gratitude for the achievements of past GI’s, diggers and the Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels.

After reaching Buna, travel to Popondetta for your return flight to Port Moresby.

‘We are here today, because they were here before us.’

Key to notes: 3 / 6 = 3 hours over 6 kms (approx)

Day 1: Port Moresby

Arrive in Port Moresby. Airport pickup and transfer to your hotel accommodation. Join your fellow adventurers tonight for an evening meet & greet then a program brief. We know we have arrived in the ‘land where we learn to expect the unexpected’! Evening meal and check your last minute packing. Overnight: Port Moresby

Day 2: Moresby to Gaba Gaba – commence trek – Gonemu (B,L,D) drive time 2-3 hrs 4/9

Today will be your first taste of breaking new ground in PNG – a surreal feeling. After breakfast we board our PMV for the drive down the highway to Gabagaba. Optional Bomana Cemetery visit en route. It was at Gabagaba that the American Army Engineers started cutting a track through the dense jungle to forge access to the Owen Stanley Ranges to the north. After a 3 hour drive plus 4 hours trekking, we set up our bivvy camp on the banks of the Kemp Welch River, maybe enjoy a swim and then relax. Tonight is our first taste of village hospitality at the village of Gonemu. Overnight: Gonemu.

Day 3: Gonemu to Kemp Welch River (B,L,D) 11/21

An early morning start. Our walk continues alongside the Kemp Welch River in the foothills of the Owen Stanley’s. Harder walking today as we gain and then lose altitude for most of the day. We will set up another bivvy camp on the banks of the Kemp Welch River and maybe enjoy another swim, then relax. Overnight: Kemp Welch River.

Day 4: Kemp Welch River to New Barataka (B,L,D) 9/14

Our trek continues along the Kemp Welch River as we walk further inland. We encounter a taste of what is to come with an extremely steep 200 metre climb up a hill beside the river. Of course we then go down the other side which is just as steep! Let’s hope it is not wet at the time when we hit this vertical. Tonight is our second taste of village hospitality at New Barataka. Overnight: New Barataka

Day 5: New Barataka (B,L,D) 0/0

Today is a scheduled rest day. We may or may not use this, but we have contingency plans to cover the likelihood of adverse weather conditions. Rain or possibly torrential rain is very likely during our trek. We also need to ensure all trekkers and particularly our national carriers are in good shape to cross the main range ahead. Overnight: New Barataka

Day 6: New Barataka to Bush camp (B,L,D) 10/15

Today we leave the Kemp Welch River and walk up the beautiful Som Creek. This day in particular, we use our river walking shoes as we are in the creek for hours. We leave the easy creek walking and tackle the first of many long steep climbs; on this one we gain 700 metres vertical. Our trek is getting harder. Overnight: Bush camp bivvy.

Day 7: Bush camp to Tabu (B,L,D) 10/15

This morning we will set off for another tough days walking / climbing as we start to gain a foothold on the Owen Stanley Ranges. Tonight we enjoy the hospitality of the people from Tabu village in a guesthouse. The children from this village in particular, were enthralled by having us stay and would not leave us alone until well after we had played ball with them, enjoyed a shower and the delights of their local fruits. Overnight: Tabu village

Day 8: Tabu to Laronu (B,L,D) 10/19

Even though we walk a fair distance, we enjoy a relatively easy walk today through the villages of Igonomou, Dorobisoro and Memie, before we receive a traditional welcome in our Trek Masters Village of Laronu and stay in the recently built guest house for GT trekkers. Overnight: Laronu village

Day 9: Laronu Village (B,L,D) 0/0

Today is a scheduled rest day. We may or may not use this, but we have contingency plans to cover the likelihood of adverse weather conditions. Rain or possibly torrential rain is very likely during our trek. We also need to ensure all trekkers & our national carriers are in good shape to cross the main range. Overnight: Laronu village

Day 10: Laronu to Wairi’s Bush camp (B,L,D) 7/9

An early start to the day, as we have a tough 900 metre climb to Wairi’s bush camp in the middle of the rainforest on the south side foot of Mt Suwemalla. We set up camp early and rest for the afternoon prior to our assault on Ghost Mountain tomorrow. Overnight: Wairi’s bush camp bivvy.

Day 11: Wairi’s Bush camp to Ghost Mountain bush camp (B,L,D) 9/9

Today we climb Mt Suwemalla (Mt Obree) or Ghost Mountain, very steep, elevation ~ 2750 metres and can only imagine the hardships faced by American troops as they crossed the range in 1942. Enjoy great views of yet more mountain ranges to the north, of Mt Lamington and the Kumusi River valley. A tough but very rewarding day, with a bush camp bivvy at night. Overnight: Ghost Mountain bush camp

Day 12: Ghost Mountain bush camp to Jaure (B,L,D) 5/10

A relatively easy day’s walk as we make the village of Jaure and stay in a guesthouse. This was the village where the Americans were re supplied. 5 companies split into 3 directions as they head toward the enemy on the northern beaches. Overnight: Jaure village

Day 13: Jaure to bush camp (B,L,D) 8/12

Today is another relatively easy day’s walk as we make our bush camp bivvy early today. More downs than ups as we are now over the main range. Overnight: Bush camp bivvy.

Day 14: Bush camp to Umwate (B,L,D) 10/17

Lots of ups and down today as we drop a further 500 metres. Late afternoon we make the beautiful village of Umwate and enjoy their guest house. Overnight: Umwate village

Day 15: Umwate to Itokhama (B,L,D) 5/11

Today we start to walk the lowlands and fewer ups and downs. We will receive a traditional welcome at the wonderful village of Itokhama. Every day from now is less arduous as the big verticals are behind us, however, don’t think it will be easy as you are still in the tropics. Guest house, magnificent pineapples, great fruit and hospitality from this area. Overnight: Itokhama village

Day 16: Itokhama to Natunga (B,L,D) 8/15

More lowlands walking today and arrive mid afternoon at the village of Natunga and hopefully another guest house. We are getting closer to the final destination. Overnight: Natunga village

Day 17: Natunga to Sewa (B,L,D) 8/15

Fewer ups and downs today as we enjoy relatively easy walking on the flat. Arrive mid afternoon at the village of Sewa and another guest house. We are constantly reminded of the difficulty of walking in this environment in this country. Whilst the hills are not as high or long, we are all realising that walking at lower altitudes has its drawbacks; the heat & humidity. Overnight: Sewa village

Day 18: Sewa to Girua River – finish trek – Popondetta to Buna (B,L,D) 3/8 2-3 hrs PMV

An early start to the day, as we have a long day ahead. Our long walk finishes at the Girua River where the old bridge has been washed away. We then meet our PMV for a drive into Popondetta to re supply, then drive into the village of Buna on the north coast, the scene of horrific battle scenes in late ’42. Soon we will be able to smell the Solomon Sea and enjoy swimming in waters that are about 26 C degrees year round. Overnight: Buna village

Day 19: Port Moresby (B,L,D) 2-3 hrs PMV

PMV to Popondetta for our flight back across the mountains we have just trekked over. Fly to Port Moresby then our hotel for some more traditional sleeping quarters. A couple of drinks as we relax by the pool and think about the significance of what we have just achieved. Overnight: Port Moresby

Day 20: Tour ends (B)

After breakfast, a transfer from the hotel will take you to Jackson’s International Airport for your return trip to Australia.

Located in the northern part of Western Australia, the Kimberley extends from Broome in the west to Kununurra to Lake Argyle in the east, from the Indian Ocean to just south of the main Great Northern Highway (Route 1). It covers about 421,000 square kilometres — slightly larger than Japan and much larger than the UK.

The Kimberley is remote area of the Australian outback, sparsely populated and contains unparalleled biodiversity. It is a hidden world of deep gorges, rugged escarpments and plateaus, interspersed with cascading waterfalls and breathtaking scenery.

This was one of the earliest settled regions of Australia and offers an extraordinary array of vegetation and wildlife, sustaining Aboriginal people for thousands of years. From its scorched Desert fringes and vast Eucalypt forests, remnant rainforest, wild rivers and coastal mangrove communities, the Kimberley is one of the world’s last wild places.

There are very few trekking adventures available in the Kimberley region; and this experience will take you into the heart of this most magnificent of Australian outback areas. You will experience geology that is both varied and fascinating and enjoy some spectacular scenery. Our vast trekking experience coupled with our ability to take you into those “special” places, will ensure your adventure is one that provides you with long lasting memories.

Kununurra is the base for our Kimberley experience. From your vantage point during an awe inspiring helicopter ride to our start point, you will view spectacular rugged ranges, water and an abundance of birds and wildlife. situated alongside Lake Kununurra on the magnificent Ord River. Kununurra provides the perfect starting point for our 9 day Australian trekking and paddling experience, taking us through areas seldom seen.

You will marvel at the ruggedness of the surrounding landscape and the beauty of the the Ord River as you trek this unique Australian tour experience.

Getaway Trekking is the only company taking trekkers along the entire Kapa Kapa Track.

In October 2009, Getaway Trekking completed reconnaissance of this trek; this is now open this to serious trekkers.

The Kapa Kapa Track runs approximately parallel to the southeast of the Kokoda Track and in October 1942 was used by the Americans as an alternative to the Kokoda Track, which was at that time heavily occupied by Japanese and Australian forces. The Kapa Kapa Track was used in an attempt to outflank the enemy and catch them by surprise on the northern beaches.

The Australians advised the Americans not to take this route as they believed it to be more difficult than the Kokoda Track to the west. And they were right!

This adventure tour is for serious trekkers only. The distance at over 200 kilometres is more than twice as long as the Kokoda Track and the altitude of 2,750 mts ASL significantly higher. Total ascent & descent is around 14,400 metres, with many very steep and challenging ranges.

The tour duration will be 20 days, of which 1-3 days (dependent on weather) will be spent at Buna* on the north coast. This correctly reflects the passage of the Americans over the track, as they began at Gabagaba** on the south coast and they too concluded at Buna. We believe we accurately retrace the Americans route in late 1942.

This is a new trekking adventure appealing to those who have completed the Kokoda Track and are looking for a genuinely serious challenge. During our reconnaissance, we passed through villages who had never seen ‘taubadas’ – white men – before!

We travel by PMV from Port Moresby to Gabagaba. The track spans over 200 kilometres across the Owen Stanley Range near Mt Suwemalla (or Ghost Mountain) and includes many river crossings. The trek is completed with a PMV ride into Buna, before flying back to Port Moresby from Popondetta.

*Buna is where the campaign ended on January 22nd 1943.

**Gabagaba, 50 kms to the south east of Port Moresby, is where a Company of Engineers from the US 32nd Division commenced cutting a track in mid 1942.

The trip could be described as being in four sections:

First

Kemp Welch River, waterfalls & jungle – natural scenery (medium walking)

Secondsection

Mountains, more mountains & more; dense jungle, villages and village living (tough walking).

Third section

Beautiful villages, lowlands, jungle scenery, (hard walking).

Fourth section

Popondetta, Buna & Sanananda on the north coast. If the weather is kind to us, not too much rain, we spend a few days here on R & R.

Notes:

It took the Americans 42 days to cross from coast to coast

We have limited our group size to only 14 trekkers due to the logistics of this particular trek.

Our aim is to provide you with a safe, eco-friendly and culturally sensitive experience in another of the world’s best kept secrets.

Suggested reading:

“The Ghost Mountain Boys”, by American author James Campbell, Crown Publishers, New York.
Quote from this book by one the veterans of the 32nd Division; “If I owned Hell and I owned New Guinea, I would live in Hell and rent out New Guinea”
