Asaro Mudmen

Just outside Goroka in the Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea, is a small village that is home to the Asaro Mudmen.

Legend has it that during a land dispute, the Mudmen were defeated by an rival tribe, forcing them to flee into the Asaro River. Concerned for their safety, they lay low until dusk before attempting their escape. The enemy, witnessing their rise from the muddy banks covered in mud, believed them to be spirits. Most tribes in Papua New Guinea are great believers of the spirit world, and the rival tribe fled in fear.Unaware their rivals were still in their village, the Mudmen returned home. The enemy were so terrified they ran back to their village and held a special ceremony to ward off the spirits. The Asaro Mudmen were victorious.

Sue_in_Mudman_maskGetaway Trekking recently had the great pleasure of visiting the Asaro Mudmen in Goroka, as a guest of PNG Tourism. We also visited Madang, adding to the many other provinces we have explored.
