…and why it matters…
In travelling to developing nations, we believe we have a responsibility to ensure we are socially, culturally and environmentally aware.
We are proud of the relationships we have developed with our local trek & adventure operators and have found over the years that very special bonds form between people of all backgrounds when participating in our adventures.
Papua New Guinea
Our most long term relationships are with the people of PNG and in particular the villages of Buna and Efogi 2 (Launumu).
Staff and clients of Getaway Trekking have been regular and welcome visitors to Buna for the 14 years we have been in operation. We love interacting with the kids at the Buna school, and have been able to provide some much needed materials for their use. Australian schools often have books that have are no longer required, and the kids at Buna have been the happy recipients of many of these, and other materials necessary for day to day activities at school. In addition, we have assisted both financially and physically with other village infrastructure works in Buna, and continue to work with village representatives on appropriate projects for their community.
Efogi 2 (Launumu) is a favourite destination for our Kokoda trekkers. At around the half way mark, the magnificent welcome we receive on our arrival is a tonic for the sorest of feet! Getaway Trekking is proud to have been able to provide some assistance to Stanley Enage, supporting children without parents who are able to provide for them. Many Getaway Trekking clients continue to provide financial assistance towards these kid’s school costs, believing as we do, that education is a basic right of kids all around the world.
Nepal
In Nepal, we support the Sambhav Nepal Foundation. A registered non-profit organization, it’s main objectives are to establish and implement long lasting sustainable education and health systems that impact isolated areas of Arupokhari, Aruchanaute and Ratmate villages (thirty villages in total) which are located in the Northern part of the Gorkha district in Nepal. Gorkha is located North West from Kathmandu.
In rural regions of Nepal, adequate schools with quality English Medium Education facilities rarely exist, a factor that contributes to continuing poverty and lack of economic development. Support is necessary for construction, renovation, furnishing and equipping the schools.
The foundation’s deep sense of commitment continues through to the community health status, while seeking to alleviate the deficiency of Nepali people by providing high quality, accessible, preventive as well as curative health services.
We at Getaway Trekking, feel privileged in helping you make your journey a safe and most rewarding experience.
